There Is More Outside

Tai Ajayi

Life is beautiful everyone says so.
You overslept and missed the exhibition.

This will make up for it.

I was seven, and lazied in the sands outside the house
made a house, heaping sands over my small leg.
I put some sands in my mouth too.

This is Peter, the Yoruba scientist
teaching about the Nok. He said
Some time ago, people from Ife were stubborn
and were soon turned into heads buried in history.

That is Emotan, one queen from Benin
She is the beauty of the past,
You know how deep that sounds.

This artist is selfish, placing charcoals
on the head of a woman
then he will call the world sexist.

That is a painting of your hands,
will put them in my room,
Hopefully you will hold our daughter
and show her arts.

Mo,
can I show you more arts!
